Ticagrelor (Brilinta) is a novel antiplatelet agent that holds an important position in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
What is Ticagrelor (Brilinta)?
Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)
Indicated for patients with unstable angina, non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Limited to cases where dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin is applicable and other P2Y12 antagonists are difficult to use.
Old Myocardial Infarction
For patients with at least one high-risk factor for atherothrombosis.
Risk factors include: age ≥ 65 years, diabetes mellitus requiring pharmacotherapy, history of multiple myocardial infarctions, angiographically confirmed multi-vessel disease, or non-end-stage chronic kidney disease.
Unique Mechanism of Action
Selectively blocks the binding of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to P2Y12 receptors, inhibiting platelet activation.
Simultaneously inhibits the equilibrative nucleoside transporter 1 (ENT-1), increasing local adenosine concentration and enhancing vascular protective effects.
