Aceclidine Eye Drops is an innovative ophthalmic medication that was first approved in the United States in 2025. As a cholinergic agonist, this drug provides a new treatment option for patients with presbyopia through its unique mechanism of action.

What Are the Indications for Aceclidine Eye Drops?

Core Indications

The definite indication of Aceclidine Eye Drops is the treatment of presbyopia in adults.

Presbyopia is an age-related vision problem characterized mainly by difficulty in near vision, which is the primary therapeutic area of this drug confirmed through rigorous clinical trials.

Usage Restrictions

It should be noted that this drug is not suitable for pediatric populations, as presbyopia does not occur in children.

It is also not recommended for patients with known allergies to aceclidine or any component in Aceclidine Eye Drops.

Dosage Form Specifications and Physicochemical Properties of Aceclidine Eye Drops

Drug Composition

Aceclidine Eye Drops is a cholinergic muscarinic receptor agonist, available as a sterile, clear to opalescent, colorless to slightly yellowish, and viscous ophthalmic solution.

Each milliliter of Aceclidine Eye Drops contains 1.75% aceclidine hydrochloride (17.82 mg) as the active ingredient.

Chemical Properties

The chemical names of aceclidine hydrochloride are: 1) 3-acetoxyquinuclidine hydrochloride; 2) 3-quinuclidinyl acetate hydrochloride.

Its molecular weight is 205.68 g/mol, and its molecular formula is C₉H₁₅NO₂·HCl.

Excipient Composition

The inactive ingredients in the eye drops include: polysorbate 80, mannitol, hypromellose, disodium edetate dihydrate, sodium citrate dihydrate, and water for injection.

It may also contain hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide to adjust the pH to between 4.5 and 5.5 if necessary.

Importantly, Aceclidine Eye Drops contains no antimicrobial preservatives.

Dosage Form Design

Aceclidine Eye Drops is supplied in single-dose vials, with each vial containing 0.4 mL of the solution.

This design not only ensures sterility during use but also avoids ocular irritation that may be caused by preservatives.

Storage Methods for Aceclidine Eye Drops

Routine Storage Conditions

Aceclidine Eye Drops needs to be stored under refrigerated conditions at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C) and must not be frozen.

When stored under refrigeration, Aceclidine Eye Drops can be used until the expiration date.

Handling of Special Circumstances

Once the packaging bag or vial is removed from the refrigerated environment, Aceclidine Eye Drops can be stored at room temperature [up to 77°F (25°C)] but must be used within 30 days.

Transportation Tolerance

During transportation, Aceclidine Eye Drops can be stored at temperatures up to 104°F (40°C) for no more than 8 days.

Usage Precautions

To avoid eye injury or contamination, care should be taken to prevent the single-dose vial from contacting the eye or any other surfaces.

The opened single-dose vial and any remaining contents should be discarded after use.
