Forteo (teriparatide) is approved for specific osteoporosis patients. It treats postmenopausal women at high risk of fractures or intolerant to other therapies.

It also benefits men with primary or hypogonadal osteoporosis needing bone mass increase, and men/women with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis on ≥5 mg prednisone equivalents. Contraindications include hypersensitivity to teriparatide, increased osteosarcoma risk (e.g., open epiphyses, Paget's disease, bone metastases), hypercalcemic disorders, and active urolithiasis. Use beyond 2 years requires sustained high fracture risk. Caution is advised in renal impairment, and digoxin users face toxicity risks due to transient hypercalcemia.
