Cenobamat is an oral antiepileptic drug primarily indicated for the treatment of partial-onset seizures in adults. First approved in the United States in 2019, it is classified as a novel antiepileptic agent, with its mechanism of action involving the inhibition of voltage-gated sodium currents and positive allosteric modulation of GABAA receptors.

What Are the Indications for Cenobamat?

Indications

The primary indication of cenobamat is the treatment of partial-onset seizures in adult patients.

This drug is suitable for adult patients with partial-onset seizures, either with or without secondary generalized seizures.

It should be noted that the efficacy of cenobamat in pediatric patients has not been established to date; therefore, it is not recommended for use in individuals under 18 years of age.

A strict dose escalation regimen must be followed during administration to minimize the risk of severe adverse reactions.

Dosage Forms, Specifications and Physical Characteristics of Cenobamat

Dosage Forms and Specifications

Cenobamat tablets are available in six strengths: 12.5 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, 150 mg, and 200 mg.

All tablets are marked with the letters "SK" and the corresponding dosage for easy identification.

Physical Characteristics

12.5 mg tablets: Uncoated, round, white to off-white.

25 mg tablets: Film-coated, round, brown.

50 mg tablets: Film-coated, round, yellow.

100 mg tablets: Film-coated, round, brown.

150 mg tablets: Film-coated, round, light orange.

200 mg tablets: Film-coated, modified oval, light orange.

Tablets should be swallowed whole, without chewing or crushing, and may be taken with or without food. The medication is supplied with a dedicated titration pack to facilitate gradual dose adjustment from the initial dose to the maintenance dose during treatment.

Storage Instructions for Cenobamat

Storage Temperature

Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).

Short-term storage at 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F) is permitted, which is defined as controlled room temperature.

Storage Precautions

Avoid storing the medication in humid, high-temperature environments or under direct sunlight.

Keep the drug out of the reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion.

Expired or unused medication should be safely disposed of through appropriate channels and must not be discarded arbitrarily.

Cenobamat is a controlled substance with a risk of abuse and dependence; it should be stored securely to prevent non-medical use.
