Sandostatin is a freeze-dried powder injection of white or off-white powder, the main ingredient of which is octreotide. Other aliases include SANDOSTATIN LAR, Octreotide Acetate Injection, Octreotide Acetate Injection, and Octreotide. This article mainly explains Sandostatin to help patients better understand this drug.

Sandostatin treatment effect

In a trial of 101 patients with acromegaly, most patients used SANDOSTATIN at a dose of 100mcg or 200mcg three times a day, and their growth hormone levels were <5ng/ml. Then they switched to 20mg or 30mg Sandostatin once every 4 weeks, with a maximum of 27 to 28 injections.

A few patients received a dose of 10mg or 40mg. The test confirmed that patients who used Sandostatin, like those who used Sandostatin injection, had normalized growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1, and their clinical symptoms were under control.

How to reduce Sandostatin side effects

During the use of Sandostatin, side effects or adverse reactions may occur, including diarrhea, cholelithiasis, abdominal pain, flatulence, nausea, back pain, fatigue, headache, dizziness, etc. When patients feel uncomfortable, they can refer to the following methods to reduce their discomfort.

1. Consult a doctor to adjust the dosage

It is very important to consult a doctor as soon as possible. The adverse reactions of the drug may be caused by individual differences, drug dosage or interaction with other drugs. Communicating with a doctor can help determine whether it is necessary to adjust the drug dosage, change the drug or take other treatment methods.

2. Pay attention to the use of the drug

Read the instructions for use of Sandostatin carefully, use the drug correctly according to the doctor's or pharmacist's advice, and clarify whether it needs to be taken before or after meals, whether it needs to be taken with food, or on an empty stomach. The correct use method helps reduce the occurrence of discomfort symptoms.

3. Dietary precautions

The most common adverse reactions during the use of Sandostatin are gastrointestinal adverse reactions, and diet is very important for relieving gastrointestinal symptoms. Patients should avoid eating greasy, spicy, and irritating foods, such as fried foods, chili peppers, coffee, etc. Increasing dietary fiber intake, such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, can help improve gastrointestinal function.

4. Replenish water

Symptoms such as diarrhea and nausea caused by using Sandostatin will cause body water loss. Maintain adequate water intake and drink water, light salt water, or oral rehydration saline in moderation to prevent dehydration.

5. Rest and adjustment

If symptoms such as fatigue, headache, and dizziness occur, proper rest is necessary. Reasonable arrangement of daily activities and work and rest time, and adequate sleep will help the body recover and relieve discomfort symptoms.

6. Avoid driving and operating dangerous machinery

If Sandostatin causes dizziness, headache, etc., avoid driving a vehicle or operating dangerous machinery to ensure safety. If the symptoms persist for a long time, worsen, or are accompanied by other serious symptoms, contact a doctor in time for further evaluation and treatment.

7. Drug treatment

If the above physical therapy methods are not effective in alleviating adverse reactions, drugs should be used for corresponding treatment under the guidance of a doctor. Taking gastrointestinal discomfort as an example, if diarrhea occurs, montmorillonite powder can be used to stop diarrhea, and if abdominal pain occurs, omeprazole enteric-coated capsules, sucralfate chewable tablets and other drugs can be taken.

In addition to adverse reactions, during the use of Sandostatin, you also need to pay attention to cholelithiasis and its complications, hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, abnormal thyroid function, cardiovascular-related events, precautions for women of childbearing age, nutrition, incompatibility taboos, and keep away from children's sight to avoid children taking it by mistake.
