ZETIA, with the generic name ezetimibe, is a lipid-lowering agent classified as a dietary cholesterol absorption inhibitor. Its primary mechanism involves targeting the Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) protein in the small intestine, which blocks the absorption of biliary and dietary cholesterol. This oral medication is formulated as a 10 mg tablet. It is not metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system, which differentiates it from statins and influences its drug interaction profile.
Adults and pediatric patients (≥10 years) with primary hyperlipidemia, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), used alone or with a statin.
Adults with mixed hyperlipidemia, in combination with fenofibrate.
Adults and pediatric patients (≥10 years) with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH), used with a statin and other LDL-lowering therapies.
Adults and pediatric patients (≥9 years) with homozygous familial sitosterolemia, to reduce elevated sitosterol and campesterol.
10 mg orally once daily, with or without food.
