SYMPROIC (naldemedine) is an opioid antagonist used to treat opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in adults with chronic non-cancer pain or related to prior cancer treatment, improving gastrointestinal motility without altering opioid analgesic effects.

Therapeutic Effects of SYMPROIC in Opioid-Induced Constipation

SYMPROIC (naldemedine) is specifically indicated for the management of opioid-induced constipation (OIC) in adult patients with chronic non-cancer pain, including those with pain from previous cancer treatments. This opioid antagonist works by selectively binding to opioid receptors in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, thereby reversing opioid-induced inhibition of bowel motility. It improves symptoms of constipation without affecting the central analgesic effects of opioids. 

By targeting the GI system, naldemedine alleviates common OIC symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and infrequent bowel movements, thereby enhancing patient comfort and overall quality of life. The drug does not require any changes to the opioid analgesic regimen and can be used in patients on stable opioid doses. However, its efficacy may be reduced in patients on short-term opioid therapy (less than four weeks).
